What will you learn during the PADI Open Water Diver Course

The PADI Open Water Diver Course is broken down into 3 components:

Knowledge Development
Complete eLearning online at your own pace before you start your in-person training. The eLearning must be completed within 12 months prior to your course start date. Total time committment is approximately 8-15 hours.

Confined Water Dives
Under the direct supervision of your PADI Instructor, you will complete 5 dives to practice and master the basic scuba diving skills in a calm confined water environment at our local shore dive site in Tobermory, called 'The Tugs'.

Open Water Dives
During 4 open water dives, you will repeat the skills you have learned with your PADI Instructor. This is the part you have been waiting for! Get ready to experience the freedom of open water and explore the historic shipwrecks of Tobermory!

Why get certified with Blue Heron Adventures?

The entirety of the course in taught in the Fathom Five National Marine Park, where you will see shipwrecks from the 1800 and 1900's in crystal clear waters.

No evening classes or weekend pool sessions on separate days. At Blue Heron Adventures, you can complete your course all at once over 3 consecutive days in Tobermory.

Learn in a small group

We keep our classes to a maximum ration of 4 students to 1 instructor, for a more personalized learning experience.

During the PADI Open Water Diver course, you will learn what you need to know to explore the underwater world using SCUBA.

The PADI Open Water Diver course is both challenging and rewarding. It includes three parts:

  • Knowledge Development

  • Confined Water Dives

  • Open Water Dives

Knowledge Development covers the principles, concepts and terms you need to know for dive safety and enjoyment.

During the Confined Water Dives, you will learn and practice scuba skills on the surface and in shallow water with pool-like conditions.

To complete your training you will then practice, apply and demonstrate what you have learned during four Open Water Dives.

Earning a PADI Open Water Diver certification shows that you met the course requirements. Dive centers and resorts require proof of certification before they will rent scuba equipment, fill scuba cylinders or book dive excursions.

As a PADI Open Water Diver, you will be trained to dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres (60 feet) and will be qualified to dive in conditions as good as, or better than, those in which you trained. Getting certifiedf is just the beginning of a lifetime filled with dive adventures.

What can I expect from my Open Water course with Blue Heron Adventures?

The Knowledge development is done online with PADI eLearning and allows you to learn and complete that part of the course at your own convenience. No need to spend time in a classroom during your stay in beautiful Tobermory.

Once you have completed the eLearning, your in-person training can begin. When you arrive in picturesque Tobermory you will meet your PADI Instructor and complete the in-water portion of your course including the 5 confined water dives and 4 open water dives.
