Who should take this course?
PADI Open Water Divers or Junior Open Water Divers who are at least 12 years old, and who feel they are ready to take the next step and advance their training with the Advanced Open Water Diver course. Divers under the age of 15 may only participate in certain Adventures Dives - get in touch to discuss specifics for various dives.
If you’re already an Adventure Diver, you only need to complete two more Adventure Dives to earn the Advanced Open Water Diver certification.
What will you learn?
You will plan your learning path with your instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure Dives. There are two required dives – Deep and Underwater Navigation – and you will have a choice for the other three, to make a total of five adventure dives.
During the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.
Two of the elective Adventure Dives typically done in Tobermory are Wreck Diver and Peak Performance Buoyancy.
The 3 most popular options for the third adventure dive are as follows:
Option 1 - Nitrox Adventure Dive with Certification
Pair your Nitrox Adventure Dive with the Enriched Air Diver Specialty course. Receive 15% off the EANx course fee when you bundle it with the AOW course. This option includes nitrox fills for both your Deep and Wreck dives, allowing you to enjoy a longer bottom time.
Option 2 - Nitrox Adventure Dive
An introduction to diving on Nitrox instead of Air during your Adventure Dive. Learn the differences between Air and Enriched Air.
Option 3 - Search & Recovery Adventure Dive
People accidentally drop things from docks, off of boats and even while scuba diving which they would like to recover. The Search & Recovery Adventure Dive will teach you effective ways to search for objects underwater.
Example Course Schedule:
Day 1: Shore Dives at 'The Tugs'
- Peak Performance Buoyancy Adventure Dive
- Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive
- Choose your 3rd Adventure Dive
Day 2: Boat Dives at 'Niagara II'
- Deep Diver Adventure Dive
- Wreck Diver Adventure Dive
How can you start learning now?
Sign up for the Advanced Open Water Diver through Blue Heron Adventures by booking your course online or calling the shop. We will send you the PADI e-Learning code so you can get started on the course.
What scuba gear will you use?
Beyond using basic scuba equipment, you will need a compass and dive knife or dive tool. You will also need to use other specialized gear depending on the Adventure Dives you choose. Your PADI Instructor will tell you what you will need and may suggest additional gear, such as dive light for night diving or a lift bag for search and recovery diving.
